If you're new to sewing and you've taken Beginner Sewing 1, or you already know how to use your machine but it's been a while (even a decade or two!) since you've dusted it off, this class is a great introduction to the art of sewing. You'll learn the basics of following a simple sewing pattern, including how read a pattern, how to sew curves and around corners, how to use seam allowances, and a few basic seam finishes.
You will leave with the confidence to continue sewing on your own, or to sign up for one of our beginner classes (including beginner quilting or garment sewing!).
Level: Beginner. You should have previously taken Beginner Sewing 1, or have basic knowledge of your machine, including being comfortable threading your machine, winding a bobbin, and sewing a straight seam. Ages 16+.
1 yard of a woven fabric of your choice (canvas or quilting-weight) - you will have the option of sewing a simple tote bag or an envelope-back pillow cover. For pillow cover, bring the pillow insert you would like to make a cover for (up to 18" x 18" - if larger you will need to purchase more fabric - ask Jo in the shop if you need fabric help!)
Good quality thread
If you would like to bring your own sewing machine, please ensure it is in good working order and, if it hasn't been used in a while, has been recently serviced. Bring your sewing machine and manual (very important!). If you can't find your manual, most can be found online by searching the make and model of your machine - we recommend printing it off for your reference.
Bring a basic sewing kit if you have one (scissors, seam ripper, pencil, etc.), although we do have some shared tools here at the studio. Fabric and all other supplies will be provided.
