About make 1
a maker studio for sewists and makers of fibre & fabric
make 1 is a studio, shop, and, most importantly, a community where we can create, learn, and share what we make with fibre and fabric. We strive to provide a supportive and inclusive community that is welcoming, safe, and respectful for all people, regardless of age, gender, size, ethnicity, faith, or skill level. Everyone is welcome!
Join us at make 1 for:
- "makeshops", which are workshops led by a wide range of inspiring local sewists, knitters, and fibre artists
- a curated selection of fabric, yarn, notions and patterns, with a focus on quality yarns exclusively from Canadian indie dyers; high quality, brand-name fabrics for quilting and garment sewing; and modern sewing patterns from indie designers
- community events like free knit & chats, a gallery profiling local artists, trunk shows from local indie yarn dyers and makers, and more!
About Jo, the owner of make 1
Hi! I’m Jo. I have been a maker from a very young age. I was taught how to knit and sew by my mother. I loved to sit and watch her sew Christmas gifts on her old black Singer Featherweight sewing machine.
When a new baby arrived in the family, she would knit up a white sweater, bonnet, and bootie set for each niece, nephew or grandchild. The love she put into these hand-knits proved the saying that "every stitch is a hug and a kiss".
I have always worked with my hands, both in my past career and and my hobbies.
I feel it is important to have a place to go, a community that supports makers. When we come together to share our creations made by hand, we empower one another. Our skills improve and confidence grows. This is my dream for make 1.
